The practice of compounding can be traced back all the way to Biblical
times. In more modern times, the role of pharmacists has coincided with the
industrial revolution and health care changes. In the 1930s and 1940s almost
60% of all prescriptions were compounded. It was then in the 1950s and 1960s
that manufacturing of compounding decreased immensely with the advent of
manufacturing. Pharmacists were happy to have manufacturers who were pre-making the
prescriptions for them. It was during this time that the role of the pharmacist
changed to that of someone who dispensed the already pre-made form. In the 1980's
and especially in the 90's, physicians and patients again realized the benefits of
preparing customized medications to meet specific patient needs. However, only about
one percent of the total prescriptions dispensed are done so utilizing compounding.
Few pharmacists practice compounding today. Those who do are known as "problem
solvers". Compounding pharmacists are using modern technology and innovative
compounding techniques to meet specific patient needs. Goolrick's Pharmacy provides
this rare service to its clients.
